The Great Escape 2018

PPL returned to one of Britain’s most influential festivals for new and emerging music, The Great Escape (17 – 19 May).

We were delighted to be involved in multiple events throughout The Great Escape, partnering with our friends at PRS for Music and PRS Foundation to present a selection of exciting sessions.

On Thursday 17 May, PPL's Head of Distribution, Russell Chant joined PRS for Music's Interim Director of Membership, Tim Arber to discuss the pilot project that is employing music recognition technology (MRT) in nightclubs. The session was part of CMU Insights' AI Conference and addressed how getting the most out of MRT involves everyone playing their part. This includes musicians registering their repertoire with PPL and PRS for Music, and also ensuring that DJ Monitor can recognise the use of the repertoire.

Our Member Services specialists also hosted drop-in sessions for members between 2pm and 5pm in the Brighton Dome foyer on Thursday 17 May.

On Friday 18 May (12 – 2pm) we co-hosted a panel event at The Old Courtroom with PRS for Music and PRS Foundation where one of the most exciting bands in the UK - The XCERTS - delved into the creative process behind their four albums.  They opened up about the challenges, creative blocks, and risks they have had to overcome as well as the impact of receiving Momentum funding from the PRS Foundation - all of which has helped them to keep producing great live shows and songs.

They were joined by their long standing producer, Dave Eringa, and Olivia Sime from ITB, who have worked with the band to help build and shape their career. The session was chaired by BBC Radio 1 presenter Phil Taggart.

The session also saw the launch of PRS Foundation's 'Five Years of the Momentum Music Fund' report, with keynotes from featuring keynotes from PRS Foundation’s Vanessa Reed, PRS for Music's Paul Clements,  PPL's Peter Leathem, and multi-platinum selling Songwriter and Producer, Crispin Hunt (Longpigs).
