The company issues licences to all UK television stations, programme makers and other broadcasters that use music videos, as well as licensing clubs and pubs, and thousands of other users who play music videos in public.
All licence fees VPL collects are distributed to the rights owner of the music video – usually the record company responsible for producing the video.
By law, any person or organisation wishing to use music video footage in a broadcast or public performance situation requires a VPL licence.
We licence the use of music videos for the following types of services:
- Broadcast & TV
- Public Performance
- Digital Video-On-Demand
- International
See below to find out more about each service...
Broadcast and TV
If you are a production/TV company making a programme to broadcast on TV and would like to use music videos, the channel showing the programme needs to be licensed.
Please check that the channel is licensed by PPL or if a license is required. Click here for more information on TV Broadcast licensing.

Digital / video on demand
PPL Video Store will be able to supply music videos if you have a PPL Video Licence or have been licensed directly with the record companies
PPL licenses the use of music videos for digital and video on demand purposes. Please see our Television Broadcasting and Online & Mobile Television sections for more info.
International
PPL Video Store can supply internationally if there is an organisation in your country that administers the collection of broadcast royalties. The broadcaster or production company must have a licence in place with that organisation.
For information on your local territory please check the IFPI (International Federation Phonographic Industry) site. We may still be able to help if you have a direct agreement with your local record companies to broadcast or dub the videos. It is up to those record companies to decide if we supply to you should the material you need not be available locally.
