PPL and SAMI, the collective management organisations (CMOs), from two of Europe’s music export powerhouses, the UK and Sweden, have teamed up with Auddly to support performers with the management of their sound recordings data when making music. The move sees PPL and SAMI take a leading role in helping performers ensure their unique identifiers are present and correct at the beginning of the ‘data supply chain’. Auddly is a Swedish start-up co-founded by songwriter, producer and singer Max Martin and former ABBA co-frontman Björn Ulvaeus.

Auddly’s product – an app and a web-based tool – helps with the collation of metadata throughout the process of making music. The data is captured for onward use in the data supply chain, helping to ensure swift and accurate remuneration for performers and songwriters. Capturing this data accurately and completely from the outset is important as it forms the basis of enabling CMOs to allocate monies to performers.

The joint initiative between PPL, SAMI and Auddly has led to the creation of a performer verification mechanism. Auddly users who are performer members of either PPL or SAMI are able to verify their membership and retrieve their International Performer Number (IPN) from within the Auddly product. IPN numbers are a unique universal identifier allocated to every single PPL or SAMI registered performer, as well as performers who have registered with other CMOs, and are used to identify performers in data exchanges between CMOs around the world.

This means the IPN numbers play a crucial role in ensuring performers get paid fairly for their work. IPN numbers are issued by SCAPR, the not-for-profit umbrella organisation that represents performer CMOs all over the world. An Auddly user who is a PPL or SAMI performer member will be able to use the unique login details that they use for the online management of their CMO account (via myPPL and Mina Sidor) within Auddly to then verify their membership and retrieve their IPN.

When a performer’s IPN has been stored in Auddly, it can be included in the ‘label copy’ relating to a particular recording exported from Auddly for record companies. This means that when record companies subsequently register their recordings with PPL, SAMI and other CMOs, they will be better able to provide more complete performer line-up information, including the unique identifiers for the performers, rather than just names. This will help ensure that performers are correctly linked to recordings in the databases of PPL, SAMI and other CMOs, so that their revenues can efficiently be paid through. This is the first stage of co-operation between the organisations who are all seeking to improve the global standard of performer meta-data and data delivery.

Niclas Molinder, Founder and CEO, Auddly commented: “We are delighted to launch the CMO integration in Auddly as well as working closely together with PPL and SAMI in order to help musicians, producers and artists to manage their metadata efficiently. Capturing this data accurately and completely from the start enables CMOs to allocate money to performers, so this is a significant step towards securing correct compensation. Early data identifiers are key in order to form a sustainable music industry and this is an important part of making Auddly the global reference point for all song metadata.”

Peter Leathem, Chief Executive Officer, PPL commented: “Everyone in the music industry benefits from improved sound recording metadata management. Robust standards and effective identifiers reduce the cost of processing data and improve the accuracy of returns to performers and record companies. Auddly recognises this and the importance of capturing accurate and complete metadata about performer contributions to sound recordings early in the creative process. Our partnership with SAMI and Auddly fits perfectly with our wider strategic objective to continue standardising and improving the data supply chain across the world.”

Stefan Lagrell, Chief Executive Officer, SAMI commented: “Swedish musicians are commercially successful across the globe and SAMI is the home of Swedish musicians. Improved sound recording metadata and effective unique identifiers for performers enable us to be even more effective in monetising performers rights and collecting for Swedish performers around the world. Sweden is renowned for an innovative approach to music technology, therefore partnering with PPL and Auddly, a Swedish music tech start up to improve services to performers continues to embed SAMI at the heart of the evolving Swedish and global music ecosystem.”
