What is a business check, and do I need to complete it?

PPL carries out identity and business checks via a third-party, Persona Identities (‘Persona’), to confirm that applicants are who they say they are and, where relevant, that their business exists and is operating. As part of this process, we will check that the individual completing the registration is an authorised signatory.

All recording rightsholder members are required to complete a business check as part of the registration process, this helps protect members, ensure payments are made to the correct parties, and to help support legal and regulatory obligations.

If the joining business is a registered business entity, it will usually be verified against the relevant company registry (e.g. Companies House in the UK).

Where a rightsholder business is unregistered or outside of Persona’s registry coverage, you will be asked to provide proof of ongoing trading existence and address to support your application.

Persona will require you to provide:

  • Proof of address documentation.
  • A photograph of your valid, government-issued photographic proof of identity (e.g. passport, driving licence, or national identity card).
  • A live selfie.
