Customised Radio
A customised webcast service is where a listener cannot control which track they listen to but can skip to the next track up to six times in an hour or can pause the webcast.
We assess these licence requests on a case-by-case basis. Please fill in the form and a member of our team will get back to you to assess your licence requirements.
On-demand clips
This licence allows for non-downloadable 30-second audio clips of recorded music to be made available on a website for listeners to stream when they want (for example, within an online learning aid, blog or review site).
The clips used in your service must not:
- imply endorsement of a product or service, or be used in advertising or sponsorship messages
- be synchronised with visual images
- be made available from any other websites other than your own (i.e., the website specified in the licence granted by PPL)
- be included on a subscription or pay-per-play site
- be used as mobile ringtones.
The 2025 fees are £174 (plus VAT) per year for the use of 1 to 250 clips, or £698 (plus VAT) per year for the use of 251 to 1,000 clips.
If you are planning to use more than 1,000 clips, please contact us at radiobroadcasting@ppluk.com.
If you need a licence for your online radio station, or for a simulcast of your over-the-air radio station, please visit our Linear Webcast Licence page.
A linear webcast is the real-time delivery of audio over the internet to domestic listeners where audiences cannot interact with or change the listening experience by pausing or skipping tracks.
Other types of online services
There are some licences that we do not provide. You will need to contact the recording rightsholders (for example, the record label owning that track) to seek a direct licence in these instances:
- Downloadable podcasts or audio programming that are kept on a user’s device for a temporary or permanent period
- Social media services that enable the upload of content by the general public, such as YouTube, Facebook, Instagram and TikTok
- Music services that offer downloads or on-demand streams of individual sound recordings and/or albums, such as Spotify, Soundcloud and Apple Music
- Permanent downloads containing full music tracks, including podcasts and online music quizzes for private and domestic use (e.g. at home)
- Streaming or other types of online music service, that provide either ‘shuffle’ functionality enabling random playback of music tracks or unlimited music track skipping functionality
- User upload services
