Register your repertoire

The PPL Repertoire database contains over 28 million tracks – only the rightsholders of new recorded music can add tracks to the database so that they can be included in PPL distributions. Performers can only claim their performances on an existing recording in the PPL repertoire database.

If you are a performer and your recording has not yet been entered into the PPL Repertoire Database, please inform the record company so that you can claim if necessary.

Become a member of PPL

To register recordings directly with PPL, you will need to be a member of PPL. To claim a performance on a recording that has been registered with PPL as a performer and receive payments directly from PPL, you will need to be a performer member of PPL. It’s free to join in both cases – find out more here.

Once you are an approved PPL member you can use your online myPPL account to register new repertoire and products or update existing repertoire.

Register your repertoire

As a recording rightsholder member of PPL, you can search the Repertoire Database for your track – simply click on “Seach Repertoire” on your “Manage Repertoire” page on your myPPL portal to begin. If it’s not there, you will need to register it – you can do this for an individual recording, a release (a track in multiple formats) and you can also upload repertoire in bulk.

Rightsholders should register recordings as soon as they can – this gives PPL more time to match them to usage reports. The latest you can register in time for the main UK distribution in June is the end of January.

Follow our step by step guide on how to register repertoire here.

Mandatory information

Recordings must comply with PPL’s Repertoire Data Policy and you will need the following data about your recording:

  • The International Standard Recording Code (ISRC)
  • Recording Title
  • Band/Artist name
  • Content type
  • (P)Date – the date the recording was originally released
  • (P)Name – the original owner of the recording at the time of its release
  • Country of recording
  • Country of commissioning
  • A full performer line-up for the recording, including details of at least one featured performer, and at least one non-featured performer (or a positive indication that no non-featured performers contributed to the recording)

You will also need to specify: rightsholder name, ownership type, rights start date, rights ownership percentage (if applicable) and the territories where you control the rights in that recording.

If this information is not provided in full, the recording will be categorised as ‘invalid’ and royalties due to the recording rightsholder will be withheld until the data is complete. You can ‘fix’ invalid recordings by submitting the complete data in myPPL – just select the ‘Fix Invalid Recordings’ icon on the homepage.

You can find video and step by step guides to registering your repertoire in our Help Centre.

Amending and updating recording details

You can change, update, complete recording details in your myPPL account by selecting ‘Register Repertoire’ and then ‘Manage Repertoire’. There is an edit option in the Action menu for all of your recordings. You can also edit certain fields if you want to edit multiple tracks at once.

You can only amend recordings you submitted to PPL directly.

Remasters

Remastered sound recordings should be registered with PPL as a separate recording from the original (un-remastered) recording only where the remaster is protected by a new copyright. PPL has prepared a guidance note on remasters to help members to decide whether to register the remastered recording in each instance. This guidance note also contains information regarding performer payments in respect of remastered recordings.

Read our guidance notes on remasters.

PPL’s Data Policy states that remasters should be identified as such when they are registered with PPL and sets out how to do this.

Disputes

If we receive a claim from another member on repertoire that already has a recording rights owner, the recording will enter PPL’s informal dispute resolution process. Each claiming member will be requested to confirm their claim and supply evidence of their claim.

We will set deadlines for the submission of evidence, after which we will make a decision based on the information provided. The dispute resolution process normally runs twice a year, in February and August. We will contact you at this time if any of your recordings are in dispute.

Read more information about the rules of dispute resolution procedures here.

Transfer of ownership of repertoire

You will need to supply us with certain information and documentation before we are able to effect the transfer of repertoire. We will need information on the context of the transfer of rights (e.g. a catalogue/label purchase or grant of exclusive licence to recordings), including confirmation of the relevant repertoire, the relevant date of the transfer and the scope of the rights that have been acquired. We may also require documentary evidence of the acquisition.

Please contact our Member Services team on 020 8068 1054 or email us at memberservices@ppluk.com and we can assist you.

If you are the beneficiary of a deceased rightsholder and therefore need to transfer ownership, you can find more information here.
