English Teacher are a British group from Leeds/Lancashire, formed in 2020. The band comprises Lily Fontaine, Lewis Whiting, Douglas Frost and Nicholas Eden.

For English Teacher, PRS Foundation’s PPL Momentum Accelerator funding provided a crucial catalyst, enabling them to collaborate with a producer they admired.

Before PPL Momentum Accelerator support, the band were excited but also unsure if they could make it happen because of the associated costs, such as studio time, mixing and mastering and travel. The funding helped the worry associated with that financial burden disappear and enable the band to focus on making a great record, resulting in their debut album ‘This Could Be Texas’.

“We are so grateful to PRS Foundation for awarding us the money to go and work with someone who has produced some of our favourite artists,” they said. “When Theo [Verney] got in touch with us, we were so excited but also unsure if we could make it happen because of the associated costs.”

“Thanks to the funding we have received, the worry associated with that financial burden was gone and we could just focus on preparing to make a great record.”

The album won the prestigious Mercury Music Prize in 2024, solidifying their place as one of the most exciting new voices in British music.

The band also received a PRS Foundation talent development bursary as part of Glastonbury Emerging Talent Competition in 2022 and received support from PRS Foundation Talent Development Network organisations Come Play With Me and Music Leeds.
