What is “Business Services”?

PPL’s Business Services allow other CMOs around the world to use the company’s technology to distribute royalties accurately and in full. This means CMOs send airplay data to PPL, which then identifies the performers and recording rightsholders to pay by matching this data against recordings in its 20 million-strong repertoire database.

How do performers and recording rightsholders benefit from PPL’s Business Services?

By using PPL’s Business Services, CMOs do not need to invest in complex and costly technology solutions or acquire and manage international recording datasets. This leaves more money on the table to be distributed to members in the CMO’s local market. Also, thanks to access to PPL’s comprehensive 20 million-strong repertoire database, more music usage can be identified and more performers and recording rightsholders can be paid.

Besides SFH in Iceland, which other CMOs use PPL’s Business Services?

PPL also supports the royalty distributions of five other CMOs: AGATA in Lithuania, Audiogest in Portugal, EFÜ in Estonia and PPI in Ireland.

How will the agreement with SFH work in practice?

SFH will send its airplay data to PPL, who will then identify the performers and recording rightsholders to pay by matching this data against recordings in its 20 million-strong repertoire database. Early analysis of SFH’s airplay data shows that 97% of recordings played can be auto-matched to a corresponding track in PPL’s database, with a further 2% having one or more corresponding tracks to manually match to. The deal will see PPL support SFH with the distribution of royalties to performers and recording rightsholders based outside of Iceland, helping to increase the amount of money distributed by SFH.

How soon will performers and recording rightsholders benefit from PPL’s work with SFH?

The first distribution of international monies from SFH to performers and recording rightsholders using PPL’s Business Services will take place in May and will see three years’ worth of collected royalties distributed. PPL will then continue to support SFH’s international royalty distributions for the next five years.
