Music services & Dubbing

Music Services companies are licensed by PPL to copy recorded music to create and supply specialised playlists of commercial music for other businesses to use as part of their daily activities. This is called Dubbing.

Supplying Music Services

As a supplier of Music Services, you are able to copy and/or stream commercial music from PPL’s repertoire to create and provide music services such as background music for shops, digital jukeboxes, quiz compilations and specialist music programmes for aerobics instructors, for example.

You will require two separate licences:

  1. PPL Licence for your specific dubbing requirements and
  2. PRS for Music Licence

Here at PPL, we represent the performers and rightsholders of commercially released music, and PRS for Music represent songwriters, composers and music publishers – hence the need for two licences.

Contact us about a Dubbing Licence

We operate a number of specialist licences to allow music suppliers to provide audio and/or video Music Services to businesses. The most frequently used ones are background music streaming, hard disk background music services and digital jukebox services. We also offer licences for aerobics services, pop quiz services, in-flight entertainment and more.

In order for us to advise you on the most appropriate licence please complete the application form below. One of our specialist team will then review your application and contact you to discuss the most appropriate licence for your needs.

Fields marked with an asterisk (*) are mandatory

Please visit PRS for Music  to apply for your other licence.

We do not typically license direct to consumer audio on-demand streaming services. Services such as Spotify, Apple Music or Amazon Music, are licensed directly by the recording rights holders and so if you are looking to provide such a service you will need to contact the relevant recording rights holders directly.

Using Music Services

If you want to play Music Services for your colleagues or customers in a workplace or venue (such as a shop, an office, a bar, or a nightclub), you will need a Public Performance Licence to do so.

This licence is called TheMusicLicence and is administered by PPL PRS. Find out more about TheMusicLicence here or go directly to PPL PRS and select your sector. You’ll find the information you need and be able to apply for your licence.
