You require this PPL licence if your student radio station uses recorded music in its broadcasts within a school or university by Ofcom-licensed low-powered AM/FM, a hardwired speaker system or secure intranet.
If your student radio station is only available online, you will require one of PPL’s Online Radio Licences.
How much does a Student Radio Licence cost?
As well as being able to use recorded music, the annual fees below allow the station to copy up to 10,000 music tracks onto a database for use in the broadcasts. The licence fees are payable on 1 November each year.
AM/FM (academic year)
£431 (plus VAT)
AM/FM (full year)
£548 (plus VAT)
Hardwire/Intranet (academic year)
£180 (plus VAT)
Hardwire/Intranet (full year)
£238 (plus VAT)
Payment can be made by Direct Debit, credit or debit card or by BACS if you request an invoice.
Will this licence cover me to broadcast online?
No. If your student radio station also broadcasts on the internet and/or an intranet that is accessible outside the premises, you will require a separate online radio licence.
